First issue!
May 2024, I am now a full time founder!
Hey there, Happy Saturday! I'm thrilled to kick off this inaugural issue of my newsletter, diving into my journey from a full-time design professional to now being fully immersed in the world of entrepreneurship.
For over a decade, I straddled the line between employment and entrepreneurship, always nurturing side projects and dreams of building something lasting.
My past 10+ years’ founder journey
It's been a rollercoaster of trial and error, with ventures ranging from kids book to greeting cards, from edu platform to digital apps. Just to name some businesses I tried in the past:
Writing club for immigrant women from China
Design service for Asian culture organizations
“Little Launcher” Children’s book series on entrepreneurship
Design platform connecting design students with local community needs
Podcast for young entrepreneurs and creators
Youtube channel teaching kids how to draw
An Education platform to enable kids teaching kids on skills they cannot learn from school
Udemy course teaching parents about “how to start a business with your kids”
Selling handmade greeting cards on Amazon
Digital greeting cards for teams
Ai App that enables mom to teach their kids on bilingual vocabulary
My journey has been a testament to the fact that building a successful business requires more than just passion. It demands a multifaceted approach, blending creativity with strategy and execution.
As creative person, we tend to go straight to our ideas and even finalize our ideas before we even have any customers. Many first-time founders make this mistake, starting with an idea, building it, and then attempting to sell it. I've learned firsthand the importance of avoiding this approach.
What you will get
In my quest to distill these experiences into actionable insights, I've penned over 100 pages of thoughts on design, startups, and the invaluable lessons learned along the way. While social media has been a platform for sharing, I felt compelled to establish a more consistent connection through this weekly newsletter.
Garry Tan, a renowned figure in the startup world, emphasizes the pivotal roles of "product" and "design" among the six key skills for startup success. Whether you're a technical founder seeking design wisdom or a designer aiming to elevate your skills, this newsletter aims to provide practical tips and a systematic approach to product design and thinking.
I will try my best to send you a new issue every Saturday.
